HABITAT
Wolves tend to live in arctic tundra,
plains, savannahs, hardwood, softwood, and mixed forest environments.
Before wolves
became endangered they occupied a lot of land in Europe, Asia, Japan,
and North America.
With more and more people populating these areas wolves
are losing their homes and being moved to State Parks,
such as
Yellow Stone National Park.
WOLVE FACTS
The wolf is the largest animal
in the wild canine family. It has 42 teeth and extremely powerful jaws
capable of generating 1,500 psi of pressure.The wolf lives in a pack or family
where they all work together to bring in food for the whole pack as well as
for themselves.
TYPES OF WOLVES
There are many diffrent types of wolves found all over the world.
The most common wolf is the Gray Wolf, which is thought to be an ancestor of the domestic dog.
The Arctic Wolf is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf but their coats are almost pure white and
much thicker
than their cousins to maximize wamth in constant cold.The Tundra Wolf
has a fine coat of fur
and is often hunted for.The Arabian Wolf is one of the few wolves who doesn't howl.
The Mexican Wolf is one ofthe most endangered canids on the planet, what remains
of
the breed lives in zoos and wolf sanctuaries. Russian wolves are champion predators
.They
thrive in the wild and their numbers grow quickly.
The Italian Wolf ismedium sized wolf, their bloodlines
are thought to be particularly pure and
relatively unaffected by domesticated dogs.
The Egyptian wolf is relatively small and often mistaken for
the Golden Jackal.
The European Wolf has short fur that is dense and rich in color.
The Eastern Wolf is thought to be a hybrid of the Grey Wolf and the Red Wolf.The Great Plains
Wolf
is also know as the Timber Wolf or Buffalo Wolf.The NorthWestern Wolf is found in Canada and
Alaska and even down the Aleutian Chain.The Indian Wolf can be considered its own species it
is thought that
their bloodline hasn't been crossed with another subspecies for 400,000 years.
The Liberian Wolf get thier Latin name
from the marks on thier tail and both front legs.
The Ethiopian wolf is one of the rarest mammals on the planet
and was once thought to be a jackal.
The Red Wolf is thought to be a naturally occurring hybridization of Grey Wolves
and coyotes.
WHY WOLVES NEED OUR HELP
All Wolf popultaions in the lower 48 states are
endamgered.
The only state that isn't is Minnesota and it's listed as threated. In Alaska there is and
estimated 6,000 to
8,000 wolves and only 2,700 in the lower 48 states. Wolves
need wildlife habitatan abundant supply of prey the humen popultaion
growing into the wolves territory is
becomeing a major threat to the wolves survival.
As well as taking their homes people are
takeing thier fur.
In some places people are hunting wolves which deals the finally blow to the wolf popultaion.
With out stricter rules and more wolf sanctions future generation won't get to know the noble creature.
